Prerequisite Criteria

In order to qualify for the Neurotology Subspecialty Examination, one of the pathways listed below must be followed:

Standard Pathway

Must be a diplomate in good standing of the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Must successfully complete a neurotology fellowship training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Alternate Pathway

Must be a diplomate in good standing of the American Board of Otolaryngology.

The applicant must have at least seven (7) years of clinical practice experience in neurotology.

The applicant must demonstrate that he/she has participated in at least ten (10) cases of intracranial exposures (i.e., translabyrinthine, middle cranial fossa, infratemporal fossa, and/or posterior fossa) in the two year period preceding the year of application.

The alternate pathway allows individuals who have not completed an ACGME accredited fellowship to sit for the exam. This pathway will only be available for a limited period of time.


Examination Description

The examination for this subspecialty will be conducted in an oral format, much like the ABOto's oral certifying examination. Successful candidates will be granted a certificate which is valid for 10 years.
